Techniques

There are many different techniques and mediums used in art. The different mediums have their own sets of techniques and can be used to change the look and feel of a piece.

Painting on its own is a huge category. There is oil paint, acrylic, watercolor, spray paint and more. Within these mediums there are unique techniques and styles. Oil paint is more commonly used for formal pieces such as portraits or landscape paintings, while acrylic can be used to create paintings for home décor and less formal pieces. Watercolor is an easier medium to work with and can be used in the same way that oil and acrylic paint is. Spray paint is used for home improvement projects, murals, and graffiti. These are just basic descriptions of what these mediums can be used for.

Within the different mediums there are techniques. Using oil and acrylic, you can work with a brush to create smooth texture and rougher texture by stippling. You can also use a palette knife to add more depth to your art. Watercolor and spray paint can be layered, and spray paint, acrylic, and oil paints can be mixed on the canvas. These are just a few techniques within a few mediums.
